What are Christmas decorations?

Christmas decoration involves using various ornaments to adorn homes during the holiday season, extending to New Year's Day. Especially in Thailand, where Christmas is considered one of the warmest long holidays at the end of the year. In addition, according to Christian beliefs worldwide, it celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem.

During the festive season, we see many significant places beautifully lit up with various colors, shimmering in the evening. Numerous activities, like parades, festive meals with family, wishing loved ones a Merry Christmas, decorating the tree with family members, and gifting 🎁, are popular worldwide.

Given the many decorations, the common festive colors we often see are green, red, white, gold, and silver. Some of the frequently seen symbols include Santa Claus 🎅, reindeers, snowmen, wreaths, balls, candy canes, stockings, and colorful ribbons!

Why is decorating for Christmas so popular?

The Christmas tree (Poinsettia Tree) 🎄 symbolizes the “Tree of Life” or the "Tree in Heaven" according to Christian beliefs. It represents joy, happiness, unity, and symbolizes the coming together of family members during this significant festival.

Thus, it's popular to decorate homes, residences, workplaces, churches, and schools with various ornaments that have different meanings, aiming to bring good fortune and beauty.

What Christmas ornaments can you find in Bangkok and throughout Thailand?

  • Santa Claus Doll 🎅

Santa Claus (Khun Bpoo Santa) is a symbol of Christmas, representing the compassion and love of Saint Nicholas, the origin of the tradition of hanging stockings for children and leaving cookies and a glass of milk for Santa. This includes family activities like writing letters to Santa, recording good deeds, and decorating letters to be sent to Santa.

    • Snowman ☃️

The snowman (Mister Jack) is a symbol of fun during Christmas, like using snow to make snowmen for decorations around the house or having snowball fights. In countries where Christmas is celebrated in summer or where there is no snow, the idea evolved into using snowman decorations inside the home or on the Christmas tree to convey fun and childlike innocence.

    • Bells 🔔

Christmas bells (The Christmas Bell) are akin to joyous sounds used to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and mark the beginning of the festive season and the sharing of happiness. Especially on Christmas Eve (24 December), bells are rung in the early morning to ward off evil energies, darkness, and demons. It's also a popular item used to remember the departed and to banish all evil spirits.

    • Candy Canes & Christmas Lollipops 🍭🍬

Christmas treats (Candy Cane) are popular gifts to give as little tokens during the festive season. The candy cane, with its stick-like appearance, is suitable as a treat. Whether given as a cute ornament or as an edible sweet treat, its significance remains. The shape of the candy cane resembles the letter "J", representing the name of Jesus. It also signifies the tradition of giving sweets to children in churches.

    • Christmas Reindeers

🦌Santa's Reindeers are faithful companions of Santa Claus. Legend says that in Santa's forest, there's a reindeer farm taken care of by elves. Santa has a total of 9 reindeer, and there are many fun stories about them. Christmas reindeer decorations are as popular as Santa Claus dolls. They not only look adorable but also represent hope and endurance.

    • Christmas Dwarves/Elves

The "7 Dwarves Bro'" are another popular Christmas decoration. These dwarves or elves are Santa's close helpers who assist him in making enough gifts for good children around the world for Christmas Eve. These dwarf dolls can be hung as Christmas tree ornaments, strung into garlands, or given as gifts to loved ones, symbolizing love and good wishes.

    • Christmas icicle ❄️

The "Christmas Icicle" is a decoration that adds beauty to your Christmas tree, representing the coldness and icicles formed in Santa's icy home. It symbolizes the richness of nature and the changing seasons. Apart from being a festive decoration, it's also popularly used as a keychain.

A wreath or garland hung as decoration on the entrance doors of houses serves as a reminder of the crown of thorns worn on Jesus's head. It also symbolizes the bright red and toxic holly berries, which resemble the blood of Jesus Christ when he was crucified on the cross.

It is believed that it will help protect the household and the people within from negative energies and demons. If the wreath is small, it's often used to decorate Christmas trees, hung above fireplaces, or on any other openings through which one might enter the house.

The star symbolizes the star that shone the brightest in the sky on the night Jesus was born in Bethlehem. According to legend, wise men followed this star, leading them to witness the birth and to present significant gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The golden star serves as a reminder of Jesus Christ's birth, which liberated humanity from their sins and repelled demons and evil spirits.

    • Christmas Rose🌹

The Christmas Rose, Helleborus Niger, with its white and pink colors, signifies pure love. Legends continue the tale of the three wise men who followed the star and brought valuable gifts to Jesus. Contrasting their riches, a shepherdess had no valuable gifts to present. However, moved by her heartfelt devotion, an angel made a rose bloom from the snow, which she then offered to Jesus.

    • Christmas Stocking

The sock used for home decoration, especially above the fireplace or at the end of the bed, symbolizes children's belief that good kids will receive gifts from Santa Claus.

The legend of the Christmas sock comes from tales about helping a poor family by a saint named "Nicholas". He dropped gold down a chimney, which landed in socks hung to dry above the fireplace. Hence, hanging socks during the festive season became a custom, symbolizing the balanced act of giving and receiving.

    • Christmas Garland

The Christmas Garland represents the love and faith that Christians have for Jesus. In the past, large garlands were made to hang on the house doors, mainly decorated in green and red, symbolizing nature and the eternal life of Jesus. Over time, the design of Christmas garlands has evolved, with various sizes available for decorating Christmas trees, dining chairs, made as bracelets for kids, or as floral crowns for young girls attending events.

    • Other Decorations

In addition to the previously mentioned home decoration items, popular adornments for Christmas include twinkling lights, bauble sets, pictures, wall stickers, and gift boxes.

The choice of these items can vary based on local beliefs and traditions. The main aim is to beautify homes in preparation for family gatherings during this festive season, filled with warmth and happiness.

However, it's not just about the items used for decoration. The essence is the increased time families spend together during this period.

    Eco-Friendly Christmas Decorations

The custom of using Christmas decorations originated in Germany but gained popularity and prominence in the United States.

The U.S. became a major market for Christmas trees, ornaments, and other decorations. Every year, numerous new decorative items are introduced to the market. The market in Thailand is bustling too.

Thailand imports also many ornaments and decorations from abroad but produces its own eco-friendly products, combining a variety of innovative ideas.

Currently, environmental conservation is a significant concern. The excessive use of disposable plastics contributes to global warming and overwhelming amounts of waste.

It would be great if we could turn this crisis into an opportunity by creating reusable festive items. And this is why Macrame by Nicha is working with the Akha women.
